Until Abortion Ends

Posted By KDunn on May 16, 2012

An exciting and promising movement is beginning among pro-lifers – especially the youth (Surprising? Not lately!) – with a project called “Until Abortion Ends.” This project has sparked the passion and dedication of many religious pro-lifers as they publically vow, via the online blog, to sacrifice something they enjoy in a prayerful effort to end legal abortion. By offering up one of their favorite things, such as ice cream, junk food, coffee or video games, these young people are recognizing the power of sacrifice in making a change for the Kingdom of God.

Marion Jones, the daughter of film producer Jason Jones, who produced the film “Bella”, founded the project with the organization, “I Am Whole Life,” of which Marion is the National Director. A strong believer in the power of prayer, Jones feels that “Until Abortion Ends” gives people an opportunity to unite in prayer and sacrifice in their effort to protect the dignity of human life.[1]

The movement is certainly catching as many see the eternal value of fasting and abstinence, and have the opportunity to be devoted to the unborn on a daily basis. To be clear, this project is not to be understood as an act of public protest, like a hunger strike, for example, but is instead an act of submission to the workings of our all-powerful God. Many leaders, including the late Pope John Paul II, have emphasized that the battle against the culture of death is primarily a spiritual one. It must be recognized that what is necessary for the culture of life to prevail is the conversion of hearts towards the reverence for human life. Yet, it is the Evil One who seeks to sabotage this conversion. Therefore, it is only through prayer and sacrifice that a great change can be made in the hearts of man, as we put the issue in God’s hands. JPII sums this truth up very well in his encyclical, Evangelium Vitae, as he writes,

“Jesus himself has shown us by his own example that prayer and fasting are the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil (cf. Mt 4:1-11). As he taught his disciples, some demons cannot be driven out except in this way (cf. Mk 9:29). Let us therefore discover anew the humility and the courage to pray and fast so that power from on high will break down the walls of lies and deceit: the walls which conceal from the sight of so many of our brothers and sisters the evil of practices and laws which are hostile to life.[2]

It is clear that “Until Abortion Ends” is following this directive from the late Holy Father to use prayer and sacrifice as a weapon against the culture of death. Of course, people throughout the ages have recognized this call to sacrifice in order to make a change. But it is inspiring to see pro-lifers publically unite in such a powerful and personal way.

I am so excited to see this movement of personal sacrifice spread like wildfire. It is a beautiful thing, to unite ourselves in prayer to let GOD take charge, as He is the only one who can ultimately change hearts and minds. It is truly a promising movement that involves no losses – only benefits. Through abstaining from our favorite things, and offering them up for the culture of life, we are not only praying to end abortion. We are also improving our own habits by detaching ourselves from this material world and attaching ourselves to the Kingdom of God. Our prayers never go to waste, so we can be confident that making little sacrifices for the unborn is a rewarding investment, even if we don’t see the results until we reach Heaven. But, with the rapid growth of the pro-life movement, I have a strong feeling that it won’t be long before these young people will be celebrating the triumph of the culture of life with a big scoop of ice cream. ;)

As for me, I’ll be giving up sleeping in — one of my favourite pass-times.. Thank God for His infinite grace that makes it possible for us to do things for Him. “For nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:37 :)

Just Play the Notes

A lesson in following God’s will note by note, moment by moment.
Written on January 1st, 2012

As these last few months of 2011 have flown by, many questions and decisions about my future have flooded in as my graduating year continues to come closer. Thoughts of where to finish my degree, what type of career to look for, how to pay for it all, and other pressing questions, race through my mind in waves of stress to decide which choice will bring the best possible outcome. As an over-thinker and a very indecisive person, I’d been looking forward to these Christmas holidays to have time to relax my mind and give serious thought to the questions on my mind. I had planned to systematically lie out my potential plans, weigh out the pros and cons, and create the ideal future for myself. But, as the classic saying goes, “when we make plans, God laughs,” – and He taught me a lesson through words from my very own mouth.
This Christmas, I bought my younger sister a Taylor Swift piano book to encourage her to learn to sight read by playing songs she enjoys. Taking after me, she is undoubtedly a ‘play it by ear’ pianist. To us, taking time to read the notes on the page is boring and time consuming, when we’d rather quickly feel out the notes as we hear them on our own. Noticing this habit developing in her, I wanted to encourage her to learn the foundational skill of sight-reading in order to harness her natural talent. Sitting down at the piano with her one holiday afternoon, we began to work through one of the songs together. It wasn’t long before she began to play notes that sounded like the song, but weren’t the detailed, more intricate notes on the page – a method that I am all too familiar with. “Read the notes!” I continued to insist. Determined to have her work for her success, I covered parts of the page and let her only see one bar of music at a time. Switching between random bars, she was forced to focus on each note without knowing what part of the song we were at, and thus she was unable to fake the melody. “You need to forget about the song you think you know, and just play each note at a time. This is the only way you’ll learn to play the song properly,” I instructed her. Having struggled with this concept myself, I could appreciate her efforts to patiently play each note as it was written. Finishing the lesson, I went on with my day, returning to my worries of the future.
As mothers always do, mine noticed the distress I was in and sought to talk to me about what was on my mind. She patiently listened to my many thoughts, most of which I shot down as unachievable or impractical. After imparting her own life experience and advice to me, she proceeded to give me a hug. But before she left, she looked at me and said something very familiar: “Don’t worry about the whole song. Just play the notes.” My wise mother put me in my place with my own words – her analogy was a perfect reflection on how I needed to approach my life journey.
All too often, we only look ahead and focus on some end result that we want to see happen. But, as we hastily plunk out the melody the way we think it should sound, we miss the many subtle details that enhance the song along the way. In our own lives, we must treat the present moment, the task at hand, as a particular duty to perform for God in charity and faithfulness. Only then will the “big picture” fall perfectly into place, as God has planned for us. If we devote every moment to Him and strive to do His will, we can be assured that He is guiding us on the path towards Himself. We just need to take each moment at a time, as we play one note at a time, and play it to the best of our ability. Just as a song only carries on note by note, so too our lives must be lived moment by moment in a continual decision to follow God’s immediate plan for us. This way, what God has planned for our future will naturally follow in His time. Fulfilling the duty of the moment is the only way to holiness as we constantly devote every action to the Lord. As we begin this new year, instead of worrying about the future and what is to come, let us “just play the notes” by carrying out God’s will one moment at a time. Let us also be thankful for our mothers who never cease to teach us great lessons, even when we are adults!

DEFUND ABORTION RALLY: October 22nd, 2011

“Kill babies with tax dollars? Not from my wallet!”

“Its one thing for an individual to make a personal choice to kill a baby in the womb. Its quite another to expect the rest of us to pay for it.” - Campaign Life Coalition Youth

On October 22nd, 2011, crowds of people will congregate on the grounds of Queen’s Park, Toronto, in front of Ontario’s legislative buildings. These people, young and old, will be motivated by an issue to which they feel the government needs to bring their attention. Confidently holding signs, singing songs, praying and cheering, the message that Ontario needs to DEFUND ABORTION will be loud and clear. Will you be there?
Unbeknownst to many, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) will cover the cost of a woman’s abortion – with tax money from our wallets. In other words, we pay an annual $30 million for women not only to be hurt physically and mentally, but we contribute to the deaths of more than 30,000 pre-born children each year. Injustice? We think so.
OHIP, the government plan instated to offer Ontario free health care, claims that they offer services for patients’ that are ‘medically necessary’. Abortion is never a medical necessity. The Canadian Physicians for Life describe it best:
“Abortion is not an essential medical service. It is designated ‘medically necessary’ for purely social and political, not medical, reasons. Pregnancy is not an ‘injury, illness or disease.’ There is no proof that abortion improves health. In fact it disrupts a normal physiological process, poses a risk to the mother, and ends the life of her developing child. There is no ‘medical necessity’ where no medical benefit or health risk exists.”1
If a woman is in a crisis pregnancy, she needs to be supported, comforted and given proper medical assistance to ensure the health of her own life and the new life inside her. Publicly funded abortion, the ‘affordable choice’, freely offered by the doctors we should trust, makes abortion seem like the only choice for women in an unplanned pregnancy. This is a crime against our province’s women. This is a crime we should not be supporting.
As we’ve all experienced, Ontario’s health care system is already lacking in providing basic medical needs, as well as being swamped with our economic debt. Paying for abortions, an unnecessary and destructive operation, is no way to spend our valued money. Perhaps the financial support of single mothers, an abstinence program, or even hiring more family doctors and nurses would be a more beneficial way to spend $30 million of taxpayers money.
So join us, on October 22nd, 2011, from 1-4 PM at Queen’s Park in Toronto for the Defund Abortion Rally. Let our newly elected provincial government know that we do not want to pay for the death, sickness and heartache that comes with the price of abortion. Your presence at the rally makes a defining difference in swaying the votes of our politicians, so we need you there! Stand up for our women, stand up for life.

We all have our crosses to bear

Posted By KDunn on July 19, 2011

Fantastic episode of Michael Voris’ “The Vortex”. >> “A Real ‘Gay’ Man.
We all have temptations and weaknesses that are unique to us, which may be an ongoing struggle for our whole lives. Yet we are so blessed that God offers us the grace and healing to get beyond them and grow in holiness, closer to Him. It is not enough to say that homosexuality is immoral without promoting and supporting another option. This video is an incredible inspiration to those suffering with same-sex attraction who are looking to live according to Christ’s teaching – the path to a holier, healthier and happier life. (and eternal-life!)

Let us pray for each other, as we each carry our crosses, that we always choose to praise, glorify and follow Our Lord alone.

God bless,

Kathleen

Zero Tolerance

Posted By KDunn on July 17, 2011

The truth hurts, doesn’t it? But so does believing in lies. We have to face it – our society is becoming increasingly more numb and ignorant to the Truth. And I’m not only referring to truth in the individual senses, like when a human life begins, or the sacredness of the sexual act. I’m referring to something scarier – a complete abandonment of morality, objectivity – Truth as a whole. The devil has started small, slowing blurring the line between right and wrong – distinctions that have been understood for centuries. And now, having a standard of morality and values is something seemingly unheard of, as subjectivity – “whatever you think is right for you” – is becoming the norm.
As Catholics, we have a grave responsibility to be beacons, lighthouses, stop signs, blaring lights of Truth to our families, communities, and the world at large. Whatever it takes, we must have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to others trampling on Catholicism, morality, values and standards. Candy-coating the truth so that it does not offend others just doesn’t cut it. What is more offensive is allowing each other to walk straight into Hell without offering a hand towards the path to Christ. Going to hell is more offensive than any honest truth could ever be – to be blunt. As Catholics who are so immensely blessed to know and have access to the Truth, we must always give our neighbor the opportunity to know it. Otherwise, unfortunately, your witness could very well have been their only chance at awakening the buried desire for Truth within them.
Of course, any hope to reverse these negative trends must begin with inner conversion, as the Church continues to tell us. We must strive for holiness in every single moment. There is no room to be lazy when it comes to learning more about our faith and building up our relationship with God. These two crucial pieces to our lives are never ending, but ultimately fulfilling. Thus, as we have only a short time on this earth, our guard must never be down. We must research Church teachings, read the Holy Bible, receive the sacraments and be in continual conversation with God. We must pray to our guardian angels to remind us of opportunities to grow in Holiness and spread the Truth. We must look to the lives of the saints as examples of wisdom – many of them suffered great persecution, had no friends and no comforts but the Lord. We must pray to our Blessed Mother to take possession of our lives and bring us to her Son.
Yes, the state of the world and where it seems to be headed is scary and overwhelming. But, as Blessed Pope John Paul II tells us, we must not be afraid. We must not be afraid to be persecuted, to be hated, to be rejected, to lose friends or to even lose our job for the sake of upholding the Truth. All these things are small in comparison to the glory of Heaven, and the coming of Christ’s Kingdom. We can never afford to lose anything when Truth and the fate of the world is at stake. We cannot sit around and wait for others to make a change. No matter what state of life you are in – young, old, lawyer, doctor, priest – we all must honor Christ and His Truth in whatever way possible. Be brave, be bold, be faithful. We are nothing but Christ’s hands in the world to bring about His Kingdom. Let us pray for each other that we are always ready to boldly proclaim our Catholic faith no matter what the cost.
